The recreational water quality in Slovakia has been monitored including the observation of water blooms occurrence, testing of their toxicity and the determination of microcystin content by HPLC method. At the same time the free water was tested on toxicity with Thamnocephalus platyurus, Sinapis alba, Poecilia reticulata and on the content of microcystins. The toxic water bloom was observed on 12 or 14 lokalities annualy. The toxicity of water was confirmed in case of massive water blooms development in reservoirs Zemplínska ©írava, Liptovská Mara, Kanianka, Kuchajda and the others. The limit 100 000 cyanobacteria cells in 1 ml was discused (CHORUS & BARTRAM 1999).
