Taxonomic review of the cyanoprokaryotic genera Planktothrix and Planktothricoides

The cyanoprokaryotic/cyanobacterial genera Planktothrix and Planktothricoides belong to the planktic filamentous phormidiacean types. They are well characterized and delimited by phenotype, ultrastructure, and mainly by genetic criteria (molecular sequencing). However, their intrageneric diversity, which is important for ecological research (eutrophication of water reservoirs, toxicity), is complicated, and the classification on the specific level is difficult. The problematics of species identification is discussed in the present review. - The study was supported by the grants EU "MIDI-CHIP EVK2-1999-00213", and GACR No. "KSK 6005114".

Pediastrum privum is relatively rare coccal green algal species with circumpolar boreo-alpine distribution on the north hemisphere. It prefers clear nordic lakes and peat bogs. Its remnants can also occur in the paleobotanical findings. This inconspicuous alga can be easily overlooked and differs from other species of genus Pediastrum in its size and shape. A contribution to the knowledge of the silicascaled chrysophytes in eastern Hungary

Six species of the genus Mallomonas (Synurophyceae) were identified by electron microscopy (EM) from three localities in eastern Hungary. The composition of this flora was characteristic for warm, eutrophic and alkaline waters. Mallomonas acaroides, M. elongata, M. caudata and M. tonsurata are common and widely distributed. Mallomonas portae-ferreae is one of the typical members of Mallomonas species in summer phytoplankton in Hungary. Mallomonas peronoides var. bangladeshica was recorded in Europe for the second time.

Moss diatom (Bacillariophyceae) flora of the Nature Reserve Adršpašsko-Teplické Rocks (Czech Republic)

Epiphytic diatom flora on bryophytes of the genus Sphagnum was studied at 32 sites. Low species richness, altogether 15 diatom species, corresponds with very low pH at all sites. Eunotia paludosa, Eunotia exigua, Pinnularia rupestris and P. subcapitata were the most frequent species. Caloneis aerophila from the rock face is a new species for the Czech Republic. The abundance and vertical distribution of diatoms on bryophytes were influenced by the moisture of the site studied.

The variation of phytoplankton in different types of floodplain pools: a case study from the River Morava floodplain

The composition and dynamics of phytoplankton communities in different types of floodplain pools (the River Morava floodplain, the Czech Republic) were studied in relation to selected physical and chemical parameters. Significant differences in phytoplankton were found between meadow and forest types of pools. On the contrary, no significant differences were found between periodical and permanent types of pools and between natural and artificial pools. Seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton is significant and is influenced by temperature course during the year.

The influence of Hydrodictyon reticulatum (L.) LAGERH. on diurnal changes in environmental variables in a shallow pool

The presented experiment aimed to evaluate the influence of Hydrodictyon reticulatum on diurnal changes in environmental variables of water. Regular measurements of temperature, oxygen concentration and pH were carried out during 26 hours. Remarkable diurnal changes of oxygen concentration and pH values were observed in vessels containing H. reticulatum.

Phytoplankton ecology of two floodplain pools near Olomouc

A three-year study of selected environmental variables, species composition and phytoplankton abundance was carried out in two floodplain pools. Altogether, 123 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were identified. Euglenophyta, Cryptophyta and Bacillariophyceae were diverse and dominant groups, especially species Cryptomonas curvata, C. marssonii, C. reflexa, Euglena hemichromata, Trachelomonas hispida and T. volvocina occurred in samples regularly. Mass occurrence of Hydrodictyon reticulatum was observed in one of the pools.

Algae and cyanobacteria in freshwater sponges (Porifera) in the Dalešice and Mohelno Reservoirs [in Czech]

In 2001-2002, the evaluation of the occurrence of algae and cyanobacteria in freshwater sponges (Porifera) was performed in the Dalešice - Mohelno System of Reservoirs within the research project "Role and seasonal changes of freshwater sponges (Porifera) in the reservoir influenced by the nuclear power plant operation" (Grant agency CR No. 206/01/1595). The survival and vitality of cyanobacteria and algae in fishpond bottom sediments

The extraction of sediment cores took place in January 2003 during total ice covering of the investigated fishpond. Sediment cores were cut into 3-cm-thick layers. Sediment samples were cultured and vitality of cyanobateria and algae was studied. Altogether, we identified 49 species of cyanobacteria and algae. Green algae were the most frequent and vital group. Fishpond phytoplankton was dominated by Planktothrix agardhii (GOMONT) ANAGNOSTIDIS et KOMÁREK during last 5 years. Cyanobacteria occurred sporadically in sediments.

Randomly selected samples of cyanobacterial mats growing on wetted walls of two distinct localities (Barranco de las Augustias, and Los Tilos) in La Palma (the Canary Islands) were collected. The single cell gel electrophoresis or Comet assay is a sensitive, reliable, rapid and economic method for DNA double- and single-strand breaks, alkali-labile sites and delayed repair site detection, in eukaryotic individual cells. Given its overall characteristics, this method has been widely used over the past few years in several different areas. In this paper we review briefly the basic data about the principles, methodology and applications of this assay and we discuss also the possible explanation for not achieving comets to date in singlecell green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The recreational water quality in Slovakia has been monitored including the observation of water blooms occurrence, testing of their toxicity and the determination of microcystin content by HPLC method. At the same time the free water was tested on toxicity with Thamnocephalus platyurus, Sinapis alba, Poecilia reticulata and on the content of microcystins. The confocal microscopy proves useful in the investigations of chloroplast morphology and ontogeny of several coccal green algae. The three-dimensional images allow the reconstruction of the chloroplast morphology and the exact determination of the chloroplast number in the cell. The effect of variable salinity on toxicity response of planktonic green alga- Scenedesmus subspicatus to heavy metals (especially on chrom VI) exposition was determined. Scenedesmus subspicatus was cultivated in suspension culture based on ISO guideline and salinity gradient was arranged by anorganic salt mixture.
